Announcement / Message

"For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline."
~2 Timothy 1:7 NIV

2009 Extended Season is Open!
We're registering wrestlers for the extended season which is from February 23 to the end of March 2009. For more info, click HERE!
Alabaster Named Alabama's Top Suburb
According to AlabasterReporter.com, Business Week Magazine ran an article, Best Affordable Suburbs in the U.S. 2009 ranking the best affordable suburbs in the U.S. state by state. The national winner was Pewaukee, Wisconsin, but what about Alabama? Okay, okay, I gave it away in the title, but go on and click HERE for all the details!
Wrestling and the MRSA Staph Bacteria
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA, is a bacteria NOT a disease. Plain ol' vanilla Staph is a bacteria found on the skin of everybody and is located almost anywhere in the environment. When there's a break in our skin, Staph may get in and cause an infection. Normally it is treated with simple antibiotics, but with the overuse of antibiotics a harder-to-kill Staph bacteria evolved: MRSA. Read more about this bacteria from Dr. Jacobson ... HERE.
They have wrestling in Alabama?
Recently in a Fort Monmouth, NJ dual match, Steven West ran off the mat after beating Navy Prep wrestler Ben Levin 5-1. Ben, a Maryland State Champion, congratulated Steven and asked "Where are you from?"
"Alabama," Steven said.
"They have wrestling in Alabama?" Ben inquired and Steven laughed, "Yeah, we've got wrestling."

We Need Your Old Wrestling Shoes!
Glenn Albarado asked, "I know many of you will need wrestling shoes a size bigger than last year. The boys just won't stop growing, ya know. In an effort to help each other out PLEASE bring those wrestling shoes your kid has outgrown and let's recycle them at the Complex. Hopefully, the shoe box will be full and everyone can grab the pair they need."
Flowrestling.com's Interview with Glenn
Our very own Glenn Albarado was interviewed by the folks at Flowrestling.com! To quote the lead-in, "The new sweet facility is up and running in Alabaster, Alabama. It is used by a youth club and several high schools. Check out this tour led by Glen Albarado (sic)."

What Should My Wrestler's Bag Contain?

What should your wrestler pack in his wrestler's bag? Even though most bags are a No Man's Land of Stink and Pew, here are a few things/ideas to pack, especially to you new-to-wrestling folks.

    • Wrestling shoes - one for each foot, you know, one left AND one right
    • Spare socks, holes are optional
    • Running shoes
    • Singlet - if the coach hasn't given it to you
    • Headgear - it's the rule
    • Warm-up suit - it's really important to stay warm between matches, warm muscles perform better
    • Hand towel - for the blood, sweat, and tears, and you might want one for your wrestler too ;~)
    • Deodorant, yes, deodorant. You may not notice your hard work aroma, but others will. I promise!
    • Mouthguard - if you have braces or don't want to ruin those perfectly spaced expensive teeth that Mom and Dad financed
    • Filled water bottle (or two)
    • Athletic tape, optional. This stuff is like wrestler's duct tape - you can use it for almost everything
    • Apple, crackers, or some quick carbs, just do Mom a favor and remember to take them out at the end of the day, not the end of the season
    • Hey, don't you have some homework to do? Hmm, there's an idea of something else to pack.

    ***PRACTICE REMINDERS***

With so much going on, it's easy to skip or forget important wrestling practice basics. Wrestlers should:
    • Wear appropriate gear including shorts and tight-fitting exercise shirts (i.e., Under Armor TM brand)
    • Mandatory equipment: wrestling shoes and extra dry T-shirt (to wear after practice)
    • Optional equipment: kneepads, mouth guard or ear protection
    • ALWAYS shower with an antibacterial soap after each practice
    • Bring a filled water bottle - sports drinks are okay
    • Report any injury (i.e., rashes, skin conditions, severe bruises, etc.) or sickness (i.e., asthma, fever, severe cough, etc.) that may affect health or performance to coaches
    • Notify the coach of any prescription(s) (i.e. inhalers, etc.) that could affect performance
    • Keep wrestling clothes clean - only wear clean clothing and gear to practice; shoes, kneepads and headgear should be washed weekly.
    • Stay clean! For a list of important hygiene tips, read our Wrestling Hygiene page
    • Eat right, you're in training! For diet advice on carbs, protein, and other things that go bump in the kitchen, read our article on Wrestling Nutrition
    • Always ask a coach about anything you're not sure about
